Here in the Los Angeles and Inland Empire, CA area, we have two different kinds of motorcycle license: Class M1 and Class M2. The kind you need to ride any bike in the current Harley-Davidson motorcycle lineup is the M1. The M2 license is only good for mopeds, scooters, and motorized bicycles. So how do you go about getting one of those licenses? Read on to learn more about the motorcycle licensing process!

How To Get a Motorcycle License in California

Motorcycle licenses are different from driver’s licenses because it obviously takes a different set of skills to pilot a two- or three-wheeled vehicle than a car. Motorcycle licensing is roughly the same as getting a driver’s license, however, since you still need to run through the same process. To get a motorcycle license in California, you’ll need to do the following:

Arrive at your local California Department of Motor Vehicles office.

  • Fill out the required Form DL 44 for Driver’s License or Identification Card.
  • Provide proof of identity via a passport or other identification.
  • Pass the written California motorcycle test.
  • Pass the Basic Rider Course or a motorcycle riding test.
  • Pay the $33 fee for your motorcycle license.

There are, however, some complications depending on your status. Before getting a motorcycle license, everyone needs to first get a motorcycle learner’s permit. This enables you to practice riding during the day, around town, and with no passengers. This learner’s permit is $33 and is good for a year. Once you’ve obtained it, you can take the test whenever you want, though if you’re under 18 you need to practice for at least six months. It’s also worth noting that you can also pass a motorcycle rider training course and drop off the certificate at the DMV to bypass the motorcycle driving test.

If you don’t have a driver’s license, you’ll also have to provide your full name, social security number, and birth date, plus your legal presence documentation.
